Every year, thousands of Americans are scammed by fraudulent moving companies. The FBI estimates moving fraud costs consumers over $30 million annually. Here's how to protect yourself and choose a moving company you can actually trust.
Step 1 โ Verify Their FMCSA License
Any company doing interstate moves (crossing state lines) must be licensed with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). This is not optional โ it's the law.
How to verify: Go to protectyourmove.gov and search the company's name or DOT number. You'll see their license status, insurance, and complaint history.
At Confianza Moving & Storage, we are fully FMCSA certified and licensed for all interstate moves.
Step 2 โ Get a Written Binding Estimate
Never accept a verbal quote or a quote given without the mover seeing your inventory. There are three types of estimates:
- Binding estimate: The price is locked in regardless of actual weight. Best option.
- Not-to-exceed estimate: Price won't go above the estimate, but can go lower. Also good.
- Non-binding estimate: Price can increase based on actual weight. Avoid for long distance.
Step 3 โ Check Reviews Carefully
Look for reviews on Google, Yelp, and the FMCSA database. Watch for:
- โ Reviews mentioning specific details (dates, crew names, routes)
- โ Company responding to negative reviews professionally
- โ Dozens of 5-star reviews posted in the same week (likely fake)
- โ Reviews that all sound identical or generic
Step 4 โ Understand What's Included
Ask specifically:
- Is packing included or extra?
- What is your liability coverage for damaged items?
- Do you offer full value protection insurance?
- Will my items be on a dedicated truck or shared with other shipments?
- What is your delivery window?
- Do you offer GPS tracking?
Red Flags โ Walk Away If You See These
- โ No physical address or only a P.O. box
- โ Quote significantly lower than all other companies
- โ Requires 25%+ cash deposit upfront
- โ Can't provide FMCSA license number
- โ Holds your belongings hostage for more money on delivery (this is illegal)
- โ No written contract provided before moving day
- โ Generic name like "Best Movers" with no local presence
Questions to Ask Before Booking
- What is your FMCSA/DOT number?
- Is my price a binding or non-binding estimate?
- Will my belongings be on a dedicated truck?
- What is your delivery window?
- What happens if something is damaged?
- Do you have GPS tracking I can access?
- Can I see proof of insurance?
